The 2010 December Daring Bakers’ challenge was hosted by Penny of Sweet Sadie’s Baking. She chose to challenge Daring Bakers’ to make Stollen. She adapted a friend’s family recipe and combined it with information from friends, techniques from Peter Reinhart’s book.........and Martha Stewart’s demonstration.
This recipe was straightforward and relatively easy to make - don't be intimidated by the yeast!
I made the dough mix and took half to cook while away on holidays and then cooked the remaining half when we returned. The first one I made in the wreath shape and the second as a log shape. The hardest part is knowing if its cooked enough, because you need to bake it until its quite brown and it's a heavy style of cake. It lasts quite a few days in an airtight container and is nice with butter and/or jam.
For the complete recipe check out the Daring Bakers site here.
Thanks to Penny for a great festive challenge!

I love stollen. WE always bring some home when we visit Frankenmuth, Michigan. It makes amazing French Toast, too. La
Yours looks great! I too found it hard to figure out if the centre was cooked. I inserted a skewer and it came out with melted chocolate on it :)
